Shadowborne Program - Top Secret
Early in the Lammergeier Conflict, military scientists created procedures to develop elite soldiers with dramatically extended lifespans, near-limitless endurance, and the ability to trigger a controlled super-epinephrine state known as the Neurospike response. These enhanced soldiers became known as the Shadowborne.
The Neurospike procedure fused cortical implants with the adrenal system, allowing conscious regulation of fight-or-flight responses. This hybrid of genetic engineering, nanotech, and neurochemical conditioning sharpened reflexes and combat cognition. These cellular optimizations prevented fatigue and tissue decay. but also dramatically slowed down biological aging. Shadowborne soldiers had a life expectancy 2X longer than baseline humans.
Early results with Shadowborne agents produced stunning military victories. Shadowborne agents were more than force multipliers. The speed and precision of their attacks made them unstoppable. If they were injured, they healed exceptionally quickly, and they were difficult to kill. Shadowborne Kill Teams of three agents routinely out-performed entire platoons.
The Neurospike procedures produced severe side effects almost immediately. Subjects experienced psychological degradation and severe neural instability. Most developed mental health issues including depression, bi-polar disorders and schizophrenia. Procedures were initiated on over 100 subjects, but only 21 made it through the process and into the field. Today, twelve Shadowborne remain active. Seven were KIA and two took their own lives.
Neurospike procedures were banned after the severe side effects emerged. No additional Shadowborne agents beyond the initial 21 were developed.
Severant - the preferred Shadowborne close quarters weapon
The Severant is a descendant of the Halberd, a favorite Swiss weapon on Earth in the 15th and 16th centuries. Soldiers armed with halberds could counter both cavalry (with the spear tip) and armored infantry (with the axe blade and hook).
The Severant kept the halberd’s three-part threat (spear tip, axe blade, rear hook) but miniaturized and modernized it. Each blade element is forged from an advanced, ultra-dense cutting polymer that holds a molecular edge. Because the head is lighter and razor-fine, it slices rather than hacks, and a shorter profile reduces snag and leverage vulnerability in close quarters.
Mechanically the Severant’s signature feature is its shaft. The staff collapses down to 60 centimeters total and telescopes or snaps out to two meters when needed. In its compact form it’s easy to carry, conceal, or mount; when extended it gives a single operator reach and leverage comparable to a traditional polearm weapon.
Expert users can throw a Severant. The head/polymer tip and a tuned internal weight create predictable spin and trajectory, allowing for accurate, recoverable throws in hit-and-run tactics. The design also accepts modular inserts (i.e. shock dampers or electrostun nodes) without changing the weapon’s profile.
